Introducing Cutchy Cash, New album, Touring & Game Shows

‘Cutchy Cash’ is the musical moniker for Glasgow-based Graham McHutchison.

He’s been championed by Scotland on Sunday, The Daily Record, The Coatbridge and Alloa Advertiser, New Found Sound, secured airplay on Amazing Radio, (both in the UK and US), RAPAL on BBC Radio nan Gàidheal, as well as community stations like CamGlen and Sunny G.

Scheduled for self-release at the end of March, his Subtle As Dynamite album coincides with a big tour across Scotland throughout April and May, supported by Dragon Soop. We spoke to Graham about his upcoming tour, going viral, game shows and eating too many crisps.

Tell us a bit about yourself, when did you form and begin performing as Cutchy Cash?

I’ve always wanted to be a musician, as far back as I can remember. My mates used to tell me that I should go for it, but I didn’t listen. A few years back I was on a stag do in Liverpool and blagged a shot of a busker’s guitar, my mate videoed me doing a cover of ‘Loving You’ by Paolo Nutini which he shared on Facebook. Within the first 24 hours it received over 4,000 views and lots of positive comments, so I thought ok, let’s have a go at this. I adopted the stage name of Cutchy Cash and started writing. I was also putting videos of me covering songs and doing originals online, some of them went viral and it just grew from there.

You look busy with regular gigs, would you describe yourself as a working musician, are you full-time or do you have a day job?

Yes, it’s really busy, I’ve been really lucky. I didn’t really stop during the pandemic, I was going live on Facebook every weekend which helped grow my audience and as soon as pub gigs were allowed, I started taking bookings all over the place. Although I am a working musician, I’m currently only part-time, I have a full-time job selling car parts, exciting I know ha ha.

You are due to release your second album, when can we expect that and take us through your typical song writing / recording process?

My second album is due for release at the end of March, I am really excited to share my new music with the troops. Being honest, the writing process hasn’t been the easiest for this album, my writing style is based on life events and over the last couple of years there haven’t been many due to the pandemic. There are still a few songs on there which relate to things that have happened in my life over the last couple of years, I’ll not give anything away though, you’ll just have to come out and see me live!

Throughout April and May this year you’re touring in support of your album, are there any places you particularly love performing?

I love playing live anywhere to be honest; it’s always been my dream to play in front of a crowd so I’m lucky enough to have achieved that. If I had to pick though, I’d struggle between Glasgow and Fife; they are always a great crowd and up for a good time, a bit mental just like me. I love the vibe at those gigs.

Do you have any other live dates, such as festivals in the calendar this year?

My diary is currently full until mid-August, I have festivals in the diary such as ButeFest 2022 and hopefully get to play both EH6 and Vibration Festivals for the second time. I also obviously have my ‘Subtle As Dynamite’ album launch tour in April and May so for now the main focus is on that. Then I’ll just see what the rest of the year brings.

What do your career highlights look like so far?

Being lucky enough to play some of Scotland most loved stages like King Tuts Wah Wah Hut, selling out venues, releasing music that does well and people genuinely like. Meeting loads of new people, musicians and fans. Organising the tour and having it sponsored by Dragon Soop is amazing for me too, the list goes on and on, I’m very lucky.
